Butterfly Birthday Party Ideas

I have devoted this page to butterfly birthday party. This is a great theme for kids who love nature and outdoors.

Below you'll find ideas for butterfly birthday invitations, decorations, games and food.

Resources:

  • Party Supplies
  • Free Printable Invitations

  • Invitations

Butterflies You can use a large colorful picture of a butterfly for your butterfly birthday party invitations. Make photocopies and cut out the invitations. Include your party details on the butterfly wings.

The wording of your butterfly birthday invitations can say: "Butterflies are pretty and fly so free - come to (name of your child)'s 6th (7th, etc.) birthday tea. There will be games to play and wings to make. We will enjoy a butterfly cake. So dress up as pretty as you can be, and join the fun at (name of your child)'s Butterfly Tea." Then include all your butterfly birthday party details.

You can make butterfly party invitations more personal. Draw (with a help of your child) a butterfly on the front of the invitation card (make sure the butterfly is big enough). Then make color copies of your picture for the rest of the invitations. Write the above wording inside you invitations and mail.

    Decorations

You can create a special atmosphere with your butterfly party decorations.

Decorate a gate (or any other area in front of your house) with a banner "The Butterfly Birthday Party is Here!" Tie balloons (mylar butterfly balloons are best) to pinwheels, and then stick the pinwheels in the ground by the walkway leading to your house. Have colorful paper streamers everywhere around your backyard.

Hang metallic (or plastic) butterflies on strings from the ceiling inside the house. Place any butterfly related toys (e.g. flowers, bugs, etc.) around the butterfly birthday party area. Attach butterfly posters to the walls for colorful effect.

Cover your table with table cover with butterflies on it. You can attach colorful ribbons to flower pots, and have one or two of them for table centerpiece.

Tie a large butterfly mylar balloon to birthday child's seat. Make a huge banner "Happy Birthday (Your child's name)!", and hang it by the table area.

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

Here are some butterfly birthday party activities to occupy your gang while waiting for other guests to arrive.

*Butterfly Transformation Station: Take each guest to your butterfly birthday party face painting station. You can put washable butterfly tattoos on their cheeks, arms, or necks. Put some face paint on their faces as well.

*Coloring Pages: You can have children color loose pages of an activity book with crayons and pencils.

    Favors

For your butterfly party favors you can have such items as butterfly stickers, bean bags, butterfly hair clips, sunglasses, toy butterflies, flower seeds, gummy caterpillars, and butterfly shaped rings.

If your butterfly birthday party is strictly for the girls - then you can give out princess tiaras.

    Butterfly Birthday Party Games

*Cocoon Wrap: Divide your guests into pairs. Give each pair a paper towel dowel and a couple of toilet paper rolls. Explain to children that dowel is a caterpillar that must form a cocoon to become a butterfly.

On the command "Go", have the pairs race to make a cocoon out of toilet paper. Give prizes for their effort to all game participants.

*Hunt for Nectar: Before the butterfly birthday party, hide foil-wrapped flower candies around your house or yard. At the party, give children Ziploc bags and tell them that's it's their jobs as butterflies to find the nectar (flower candies).

*Coffee Filter Butterflies: For this butterfly birthday party craft you will need: coffee filters, pipe cleaners, and decorative items like markers and glitter.

Have kids decorate their coffee filters. Next, gather up the center of the coffee filter and wrap it with a pipe cleaner.

*Pin Antennae on the Butterfly: Draw a large butterfly on poster board. Fold pipe cleaners in half, so you have a little loop on one end just like antennae. Put double-sided tape on the antennae.

At the butterfly birthday party, give the antennae to your guests. Next, blindfold and spin them around (one by one) and get them to tape the antennae where it belongs.

Butterfly Girl *Butterfly Relay: Break your butterfly birthday party group in 2 teams. Line them up behind the starting line. Place a bunch of toy butterflies about 20 feet from a starting line.

Hand nets to first two players in line. They must run to the butterflies, pick as many as they can with their nets, run back, and pass the nets to the next players in line. The team that catches the most butterflies wins.

*Bean Bag Toss: Place a target (shoe box or bucket, etc.) about 10 feet away from the line. Purchase several bean bags (or fill socks with beans and rice). Have children take turns throwing a bean bag into a target. Award prizes to every child for the effort.

*Eat Some Bugs Challenge: Put a bowl of gummy bugs in front of each child. Get the kids to eat as many bugs as they can in two minutes without using their hands.

*Flutter-Bye Fans: Here is a great butterfly birthday party craft activity for your group. Get the kids to draw pictures of butterflies (and other creatures) on both sides of colored paper.

Next, fold the paper accordion style and fasten one end with a tape to create a handle. Gently spread the other end and you have a personalized fan!

*Kite Flying: If the weather permits, take the kids outside for a fun flying activity.

If you don't have a kite of your own, you can make one yourself from a lightweight fabric, two wire coat hangers (or thin wood sticks), and a roll of strong twine.

Cut a diamond shape kite out of the fabric. Form a cross (out of straightened coat hangers) to support the fabric. Attach hangers at the points of your diamond fabric, then cut off excess wire.

Attach twine at the center of the cross. Attach a 2 to 3-foot piece of twine (to give your kite a tail) and decorate it with scraps of fabric.

    Food and Drink

    Butterfly Birthday Cake:

*Butterfly Cake: Bake 9" round cake and one cupcake.

Cut cake in half. Place curved edges of the cut halves side by side. This should resemble butterfly wings. Frost the cake with white icing and decorate it with candies and gumdrops.

Place the cupcake above "the wings" to resemble butterfly's head. Place licorice for antennae and gumdrops for eyes.

    Butterfly Birthday Party Food Ideas:

*Butterfly Bagels: Slice bagels in half. Split the halves again in the middle resulting in four half circles per bagel.

Spread cream cheese, butter (or other spread) on each piece. Arrange the bagel pieces so the curved edges touch for "butterfly look".

*Butterfly Sandwich: Cut bread in the form of butterfly wings. Add a celery stick body, cherry tomato and carrot stick antennae. Put veggie pieces on the bread for "spots".

*Butterfly Treats: Cut celery into small pieces. Fill them with peanut butter, cream cheese or other spread. Put a pretzel on each side of the celery to form wings. Use broken pretzel pieces for antennae and raisins for eyes.

*Caterpillar Gelatin: Prepare gelatin according to directions on the package. Add gummy worms - so every gelatin cube has a caterpillar. And then refrigerate.

*Pizza (you can cut it using butterfly cookie cutter)
    *Caterpillar Hotdogs
    *Caesar Salad
    *Chips & Dip
    *Macaroni & Cheese
    *Fruit Salad

    Butterfly Birthday Party Drink Ideas:

*Sunny Lemonade: In a pitcher, combine 1 cup lemon juice (preferably freshly squeezed), 1 cup sugar, and 6 cups cold water. Stir the mixture with a spoon until sugar dissolves completely.

Garnish with lemon slices and serve.

*Peach (or any other fruit) Nectar
