Birthday Party Supplies Free Printable Invitations
Invitations
You can make your Cat in the Hat party invitations in shape of top hats. Draw the hat on a piece of cardboard, then cut it out, and use it as a template to outline the invites on white cardstock.
Create red-and-white stripe pattern on one side of the hat. On other (blank) side write your party information. You can write "I'm turning (age). Come celebrate with me! My friend Cat in the Hat will be there indeed...Have no fear! He and I know some good games we could play, my dear!" etc.
As a variation, you can download and print an image of Cat in the Hat on the front of white invitation cards. Then write party information inside.
Or, you can use a picture of your child wearing Cat in the Hat costume. This is particularly cool, if the he or she is under the age of five.
Ask the kids to wear clothes that have red and white color pattern (striped clothes are best!)
Decorations
To create an "authentic" Cat in the Hat party environment, use as many items mentioned in the story as you can. And be sure to include a few red and white stripes in your decorations, too.
Hang red, white, and blue balloons in bunches around the scene. Attach a large poster of Cat in the Hat to the gate or fence. Draw cat paw prints on the driveway leading to the front door. Place a rake near the entrance.
Decorate walls inside the house with images of Dr Seuss characters. Spread out a bunch of stovepipe hats around the area. Have a fish bowl with one single fish. (Tip: put the fish bowl away from the play area.)
Color a large appliance box in red, and place it in the middle of the room. (It would be ideal, if you can find a red wooden crate.) Place a couple of kites on the floor.
Cover the party table with a red cloth. Put a stovepipe hat in the middle of the table for a centerpiece. Hang a sign that says "Welcome to Cat in the Hat Birthday Party!"
Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities
*Guess How Many: Place red and white jelly beans in a clear jar. As your party guests arrive, get them to guess how many are in jar. The person, who guesses closest to the actual amount, wins a jar full of jelly beans!
*Door Hanger Activity: Cut enough door hanger shapes from a sturdy paper. (Or, you can buy door hanger kit from a party store.) Get the children to decorate their door hangers with drawings and stickers. At the end of the party, they can take their creations home as souvenirs!
*Cat in the Hat Coloring Pages: If you have a group of very young kids attending your party, then this activity works well for occupying them. Download theme coloring pages off the internet. Give out crayons and pencils, and invite the youngsters to color the pages.
Favors
For Cat in the Hat party favors, give out such cool items as removable tattoos, theme stickers and posters, notepads, crayons, markers, candies, bubble-blowing containers, and so on.
Dr Seuss Birthday Party Games
*Pin the Hat on the Cat: Before the party, cut hat shapes out of construction paper -- enough for every guest. Put children's initials on the cutouts.
At activity time, tape a poster of Cat in the Hat on the wall. Give the kids their hat shapes. Then blindfold them one at a time, and get them to pin the hats on the poster where they belong.
*Balance Act: Challenge the guests to walk from one side of the room to the other balancing several objects on one hand. You can give them such items as books, an umbrella, a paper fan, plush toys, and so on. Increase the difficulty after each round. Give prizes to all the participants.
*Purrrfect Throw: Have another fun activity. Place a red box on a chair. Invite the kids to throw bean bags into the box from a distance.
*Rough, Rough, Meow: Play a theme version of Duck, Duck, Goose game.
*Follow the Cat: Choose one person to be the Cat. Put on some party music, and get the kids to follow the Cat, as he or she comes up with dance moves. And the rest of the group follows the Cat. Switch leaders after about 30 seconds.
*Surprise Package: For this party game, you'll need boxes of various sizes. Start with the smallest box: put a prize inside it. Then wrap with a gold ribbon marking it "Grand Prize", and place the box into a larger one.
Continue with the other boxes in the same manner putting generic gifts (that both boys and girls would love) in each box and placing them into larger boxes. You'll end up with several boxes (with gifts) inside a very large box. (The number of prizes should equal the number of guests.)
Have the kids sit in a circle. Play music, and get the kids to pass (or push) the box around the circle. When the music stops, the person holding the box opens it, retrieves a prize, and goes out of the game. The activity continues until there is only one person left. He or she receives the Grand Prize.
*Thing 1 & Thing 2 Relay: Before the party, paint "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" on the front of two white extra large T-shirts.
At race time, divide the kids into 2 equal teams. Give the T-Shirts to the first racers on each team. After the participants complete their leg of the race, they must take off the T-shirts and pass them to the next players in line. The team to cross the finish line first -- wins the race!
*Cat in the Hat Pinata: Get theme pinata from a party supply store, and invite the kids to take turns breaking it blindfolded with a bat.
*Kite Flying: On a warm day, take the children outside for a fun kite flying activity.
Food and Drink
It would be fun if you can get cat bowls from a dollar store and serve you food in them.
Cat in the Hat Birthday Cake:
*Cat in the Hat Cake: Bake a regular sheet cake. Let it cool, and then cut it in a shape of stovepipe hat. Next, outline stripes on the cake, and ice it in red-and-white striped pattern.
As a variation, you can outline an image of the Cat on the cake with a toothpick. Then ice and decorate the cake appropriately. Cat in the Hat Party Food Ideas:
*Cat-wiches: Prepare sandwiches using various fillings. Then cut them using cookie cutters of various shapes.
*Cat Food: For a quick snack, fill Ziploc bags with nuts, dried fruit, etc. The kids can snack on these in between the activities.
*Red Fish Blue Fish Jigglers: Prepare Jell-O mix according to package directions. Let it set. Then use fish shaped cookie cutters to turn the Jell-O into cute creatures.
*Goldfish Crackers (served in a fish bowl) *Burgers and Fries *Pizza *Popcorn *Ice Cream Cat in the Hat Party Drink Ideas:
*Dig-in-the-Dirt Milk Shakes: Mix 36 oz milk, 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream, and crushed Oreo cookie crumbs in blender. (For thicker shakes, add more ice cream).
Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and top with extra cookie crumbs.
*Root Beer
