How to Make Clothespin Dolls

Making clothespin dolls is a great craft idea for children's party. It will be a big hit with girls! Get the materials, organize your workspace - let the fun begin!

Materials Needed:

  • Small flat clothespins
  • Ultra-fine-tip markers OR
acrylic paints and a small artist's detail brush
  • Ruler
  • 2 wood craft picks
  • Cotton embroidery floss in
    colors chosen for doll's clothing
  • Crafts glue
  • Tape
  • Two 3/8x1-inch wood craft ovals

    1. Draw or paint a face on each clothespin head. (Use black for the eyes, lashes, eyebrows, and nose.) You can add a tiny dot of white to each eye for a highlight.

    2. Cut a 7/8-inch-long piece off the rounded end of each craft pick for the arms.

    3. For each doll, choose two colors for the sweater. Start by gluing the ends of the floss to the back of the clothespin, just below the head.

    4. Hold both colors together without twisting and wrap the clothespin to the legs, making stripes. Wrap two arms to match for each doll, leaving the rounded end of the craft pick showing for the hand. Glue the arms to the shoulders.

    5. Beginning at the bottom of the sweater, wrap the floss for the pants down over the hips and down each leg, ending 1/2 inch above the end of the clothespin.

    6. Wrap the floss for the boots from the bottom of each pants leg to the end of the clothespin.

    7. For the girl's hair, cut fifteen 2-inch-long strands of floss. Lay the strands side by side and tie them together in the center. Glue the center to the top of the head. Gather half of the hair on each side of the doll's head and tie with a floss bow to make pigtails.

    8. For the boy's hair, cut tiny snips of floss and glue them to the top of the head.

    9. For each hat, cut six 8-inch long strands of floss. Knot the strands together at one end and tape to the table. Braid the strands loosely, using two strands for each ply of the braid.

When the braid measures 3 inches, knot the ends. Trim the floss to 1/4 inch beyond the last knot for the pom-pom. Wind and glue the braid around the top of the head starting with a circle and ending with the pom-pom on top.

    10. For each doll's scarf, cut three-6-inch long strands of floss. Knot and braid as for the hats. Tie the scarves around the doll's necks.

    11. Paint the wood ovals white and let them dry. Glue an oval to the bottom of each doll so they will stand.
