Crayon Crafts for Children
Running short on creative ideas? I've included two crayon crafts on this page that are really awesome! Enjoy!
Melted Crayon Craft
Materials Needed:
Crayons Electric or regular frying pan Aluminum foil-lined muffin tin Cotton swabs or old paintbrushes
To melt the crayons, fill a frying pan partway with water and set on low. Set a muffin tin in the warm water. Heat the crayons in the containers just until they melt. Then remove the pan from the burner.
Remind the children that the pan and the muffin tin are hot. Using cotton swabs or old paintbrushes (they might not be salvageable), kids can dab the melted crayon onto the page.
Crayon Batik
Materials Needed: Crayons Heavy piece of paper Paintbrushes Tempera paints, watercolors, or ink Paper towel Iron
Have the kids draw a thick crayon design on heavy paper, then crumple the paper into a ball and smooth it out again. Over the crumpled picture, they can paint a wash of watercolor, tempera paint or ink.
Dab the wash with a paper towel so it doesn't seep under the crayon. The wash will color wherever the crayon is not, including the cracks made by crumpling the page.
An adult can iron the artwork flat again by turning it over onto another sheet of paper (with a rag underneath that) and applying a warm iron for a few seconds. Be careful not to let it burn! Wipe the iron clean afterward and test it on a white rag before using it on clothes.
