"Delicious" Party Activity Ideas

Delicious desserts are always a kid-pleaser - especially when they get to make them! This party activity works great with kids of 6-9 years old.

Materials Needed:

  • A table
  • Bowls
  • Spoons
  • Ice cream scoopers
  • Ice cream or frozen yogurt (various flavors)
  • Sundae sauces
  • A variety of toppings (sprinkles, strawberries, mini-marshmallows, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, etc.)
  • Construction paper
  • Felt-tip pens

At party time, set the ingredients, bowls, and spoons out on the table and let the kids go to work making their own ice cream sundaes. Tell them that they can make the sundaes as big or as small as they want, but that they need to eat every bite. (Don't actually force the kids to eat until they're too full - you just want to make sure that they don't build a mountain of ice cream.)

If you want to make homemade ice cream, let everyone participate. Read the instructions aloud, perform the steps, and make the ice cream maker turning.

For added fun, let the kids do a taste test of each sundae and judge for themselves which one is the most yummiest. (Provide everyone with a tasting bowl and serve a dab of each sundae in the bowls, to prevent spreading germs.) After that, pass out awards made from construction paper to all the kids for categories such as "tallest sundae," "most creative," or "best use of whipped cream." (Make sure that every single guest receives an award!)

    Creative Options

  • Instead of making sundaes, give the kids cones and let them make ice cream clowns. The cones can serve as clown hats on top of a round scoop of ice cream. Have the kids create clown faces using the sundae ingredients. Line the clowns up on a cookie sheet and take a picture.

  • Let the kids make ice cream caterpillars. Give each child three scoops of ice cream in a row (the caterpillar body) and let them use peppermint sticks for the antennae. Using the sundae ingredients, they can add the eyes, nose, and any other features.

  • Buy a bunch of bananas and let the kids make banana splits. Just cut the banana lengthwise, lay the halves in a dish, and place scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream on top. The kids can add any sauces or other ingredients.

    Prizes and Favors
Give everyone gift certificates for treats at an ice cream or yogurt shop. Or, offer the kids small containers of ice cream or cool pops to eat at home.

    Trouble-Shooting Tips

  • Warn the kids not to nibble while creating the sundaes or to eat too much too fast - you don't want anyone to go home with a tummy ache.

  • Tell the kids to wear old clothes to the party if you're worried about chocolate or other food stains. Or provide old shirts so they won't wear any ice cream home.

  • Tell them to work quickly - ice cream melts fast!
