Dog Birthday Party Ideas

Kids love puppies and that's why they would appreciate having a dog birthday party. Use the ideas below to plan your party and prepare for some fun and excitement!

Resources:

  • Invitations

For your dog birthday invitations, take an 8"X8" sheet of white or brown construction paper. Fold two opposite corners to make a triangle. Next with the fold at the top, bend the right and the left edges down and out to the sides to make dog's ears.

Dog Costume Then add wiggly eyes, a paper nose, and draw a mouth for an adorable puppy! Write the dog birthday party details on the inside of the fold:

"You're invited to have a doggone good time! Come wag your tail and wiggle your ears to celebrate (your child's name) __th birthday!"

Here is another dog birthday party invitation idea for you to consider: draw various dog bones, dog houses, plus put dog stickers on invitation cards. Be sure to mail your dog party invitations in advance.

    Decorations

A lot of different colors would fit the dog birthday party theme. I recommend such colors as blue, white, brown, and green. You can also use Dalmatian-spotted crepe papers and balloons for dog party decorations.

In front of the house, hang a sign that says "Welcome to Dog House!" Cut large paw prints out of construction paper. Next, tape them to your driveway, and spread them around all over the backyard.

Blow up helium balloons and hang them around. Fill the dog birthday party area with doghouses - you can purchase or make them yourself out of large cardboard boxes. Hang dog theme posters on the wall. You can put on removable dog decorations (available from a party store).

Cover your party table with dog theme tablecloth. You can also put butcher paper on the table instead, and draw dog paw prints all over. Gather all toy puppies you have, and place them on the table for centerpieces. Hang a personalized "Happy Birthday!" banner near the dog birthday party table.

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

Greet each guest as he or she arrives with the birthday child, and welcome them to Dog Birthday Party! Give them dog ears and collars.

*Dog Coloring Pages: Lay out dog coloring pages on the floor in your party area. Let the guests color them with crayons and pencils while they're waiting for others to arrive.

*Puppy Transformations: Use a black grease pencil to transform your party guests into puppies: draw a dog nose, freckles and a mouth on children's faces.

*Dog Bracelets: You can get create-your-own-bracelet kit from a party store. Let the kids design their bracelets and decorate them with various materials!

    Favors

For your dog party favors, you can give out such items as glitter balls, sticker sheets, whistles, bone cookie cutters, jelly pops, t-shirts, puppy ears and dog figurines.

    Dog Birthday Party Games

*Dog Bone Hunt: Before the puppy party, hide about 40-50 cardboard bones on the floor. At party time, have puppies look for them on hands and knees.

*Dog Trainer Says: At dog birthday party, "Simon Says" becomes "Dog Trainer Says." The commands can include: Growl, Wag your Tail, Sit, Lie down, Roll over, Jump, Stay, etc.

*Best Bark Contest: Gather the kids around in a circle. Have them, one by one, compete in "barking" contest. Let them be creative and come up with their best bark.

You can enlist several of your family members, friends and neighbors to judge the competition. When every guest had a turn, award prizes for the most real, funniest, loudest, craziest, etc. bark - so everyone has a chance to win!

*Ruff, Ruff, Meow: At the dog birthday party, turn "Duck, Duck, Goose" game into "Ruff, Ruff, Meow." Be sure to have lots of open space for kids to run around.

*Dog Show: Have all the kids put on their dog ears. Organize a dog show, where all "the puppies" can demonstrate their tricks. One of the helpers can act as an MC, announcing dog names and pedigree.

*Feed the Breed: Draw a large dog on a cardboard, and cut out dog's mouth. Let your dog birthday party guests "feed the dog" by tossing bean bags into the dog's mouth. Give each child 3 tries - the kid with the best aim wins.

*Canine Hide & Seek: Let the birthday child start this puppy party game by getting into dog house (see decorations) and counting to 30, while everyone else hides. Next, he or she searches until every child is discovered. The last person found leads the next game.

*Pooch Picture Frames: Purchase inexpensive picture frames and small bone-shaped dog biscuits. Give the kids frames and glue to attach dog biscuits to picture frame borders.

Let the glue dry, and insert child's picture (with dog ears and face paint) inside the frame for them to take home as party favors.

*Go Fetch!: Before the party, roll up newspaper pieces in sterile plastic wraps. At party time, divide the group into 2 teams. Place newspaper pieces (enough for everyone) on the opposite side of the party area.

Line the kids up. On the command go, have children move on all fours (like puppies) to the newspapers, pick them up with their mouth, and return back to the starting line.

Then all other players continue in the same fashion. The team to cross the line first - wins!

    Food and Drink

Purchase small dog bowls before the party. Use them as plates to serve all your food for your dog birthday party guests. Make sure to decorate them with each guest's name.

    Dog Birthday Cake:

*Dog Cake: Bake two 9" round cakes and two cupcakes. Stack both round cakes on top of each other. Put cupcakes at the bottom of the cake for the paws. Frost all cakes with white frosting.

Wrap Fruit by the Foot around the top edge of the cake to look like dog collar. Add a green Necco wafer for the dog tag. Decorate the rest of the dog cake: put Necco wafers and M&Ms for eyes, black string licorice - for the ears and jowls, red fruit leather - for the tongue, junior mints and small mint patties - for the black spots.

    Dog Birthday Party Food Ideas:

*Dogwiches: Prepare sandwiches with various fillings. Use dog-bone cookie cutters to make bone-shaped sandwiches.

*Doggie Bags: Put various "dog food" snacks (e.g., pretzels, cereal snack mixes, etc.) into baggies for the kids to grab on the go.

*Kooky Chew: You can get this kids' dog birthday party treat from a party store. It contains delicious little cookies and a candy bone, and it looks like dog food too!

*Pup-Cakes: Bake enough cupcakes for all your dog birthday party guests. Frost the cup cakes with theme colors. Add extra "edible decorations" such as M&Ms, chocolate chips, and other small candies.

*Banana Dogs: For this dog party recipe, you'll need 8 small bananas, 8 hotdog buns, and 16 tbsp peanut butter and jelly. Spread 1 tbsp of peanut butter on each half of the buns. Place one banana, and add 1 tbsp jelly. Cut in half if desired.

*Edible Dog Collars: Use long licorice for stringing material, and use hole-in-the-center cereals like Cheerios, Fruit Loops, etc. String the licorice through candy, and have it for dessert.

*Dog Biscuits: Make cookies that look like dog biscuits.

    *Hotdogs
    *Corn Dogs

    Dog Birthday Party Drink Ideas:

*Dig-in-the-Dirt Milk Shakes: Combine 36 oz milk, crushed Oreo cookie crumbs, and 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream in blender. (For thicker shakes, add additional ice cream). Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and top with extra cookie crumbs.
