Doll Cake

I was asked to come up with an idea for a 50's birthday party. After looking through many magazines and searching the internet I came up with this little "Sweet 50's Girl" cake & candy.

I started with my favorite Betty Crocker fudge cake mix. I used the mold for the doll cake. It took a long time to bake but once it was done it came out of the pan with no problem.

Next I rolled out a package of pink fondant that I purchased. Once it was large enough I placed it over the cake. I put folds in it to make it look more like a skirt. After the fondant was on I cut a small hole at the top of the cake to set the doll in. I the put some frosting in the hole just as an added stabilizer for the doll.

I then took a container of Betty Crocker Frosting and added color to it. With the star tip I proceeded to make flowers on her skirt and polka dots. For her top I again used the star tip to make it look like a dress. (I like to add things to my cakes even though they might not be edible.) I found this cute poodle in a craft store and added it to the dress. I tied a ribbon to her pony tail to make it look a little more authentic.

I added the 50's records at the bottom of her skirt. They were made from chocolate that I melted and poured into a mold. I cut out circles and added names of songs and put a little dab of chocolate on them to make them stick to the records. One of the records had "Happy Birthday ____!" written on it.

Also on the bottom of her skirt I added a small bag of 50's candies.
