Dragon Cake

I used two Pillsbury Cakes mixes to make three 8" cakes, two 6" cakes and two large cupcakes.

While the cakes were cooling I made the icing my favorite recipe is as follows...

Buttercream Icing:

1 cup butter
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 tsp vanilla
9 cups icing sugar
4 tbsp milk

Cream butter, shortening and vanilla. Gradually add sugar 1 cup at a time. Beat on medium speed scrape sides often. Once all the sugar is added the icing will look dry. Add milk and beat on high speed until light and fluffy.

I made all of the icing green except 1/4 cup which I made a reddish color for the mouth and 1/2 cup to write a birthday message.

Once the cakes are cold cut two of the 8" cakes in half. Take 3 halves and attach them together with icing, this will be the body. (
See Diagram.)

Attach the body to the board with icing. Cut the 6" cakes a little bit bigger than 1/2 then attach to the body with icing.

Cut the tail out from the full 8" cake. I cut the tail in half and flipped the end over for a different direction. Attach the tail to the cake and board with icing.

The half 8" cake is for the neck, I cut out a little bit out of the straight edge to make the neck curve. Attach the neck to the body and board with icing. Place 2 cupcakes at the end of the neck.

Stack the cupcakes on top of each other with icing between. I cut the top off of the bottom cupcake so they would stack nicely. From the left over cake I cut out a rectangle for the snout. Attach with icing.

I covered the whole dragon cake with green butter cream icing. I pipped extra icing on the tail, body and neck for the back ridge I also pipped extra icing on the face to form nostrils and lips. I patted it down to make it as smooth as possible.

I used an icing tip to make scales all over the tail body neck and head. I used tip #895 to put on feet.

I melted white chocolate chips and piped on parchment paper eyes, teeth and claws. I also melted Wilton green candy melts and piped on parchment paper to make the back spikes. I made all different sizes small to large (need to make two of every size).

Once the chocolate is set hard I place the ridges on the tail back and neck. I put the chocolate eyes on and piped icing around the edge. I used a toothpick dipped in brown food color paste to make the brown dots on eyes.

I piped the red icing inside the mouth. I then placed the white chocolate teeth in the mouth. I used a tooth pick dipped in red food color paste to paint the blood on the teeth. I attach the claws to the feet.
