Dragon Tales Party Ideas

Dragon Tales is a show that teaches valuable life lessons to younger kids. But learning can be a lot of fun! Invite your child's best friends to a Dragon Tales party.

There they can learn many new cool things and have fun at the same time!

  • Dragon Tales Party Invitations

You have several options for creating spectacular invitations.

First, you can visit PBS website, download and print a picture of your child's favorite dragon character. Then make invitation cards by folding colorful card stock paper.

Place the picture you've just printed on the front next to the fold of the card. Trace that picture and cut out the shape without cutting through the fold. Draw the body of the dragon adding facial features and other details. Include your party information on the inside of the card.

To make it even simpler you can download and print the Dragon Tales coloring pages. Write "Play with Us at (child's name) Dragon Tales Birthday Party!" Write other party details around the black-and-white image. The kids will love the idea of coloring their invitations when they get them in the mail.

Lastly, you can copy a group image of Dragon Tales characters on the front of the cards, "pasting" your child's image in the middle - so he or she looks to be a part of the group. Be sure to write important party info and mail your invitations in advance.

    Dragon Tales Party Decorations

Orange, green and purple make perfect colors for dragon party.

Start off by placing a theme poster near the entrance with balloons and streamers in bunches so the guests get the feel for the party right away. Place a sign that says "Welcome to Dragon Land".

You can set up a tent in the backyard or even in your living room to represent one of the "Dragon Fair" tents. Kid will be thrilled to "escape" there in between their activities or when their waiting for others to arrive.

Tape some theme posters or pictures on the wall in the party room. You can have character pictures, a large picture of forest (to represent "Forest of Darkness" from the show), and so forth.

Cut out some "dragon footprints" and tape them on the floor for the kids to follow. Fill the area with coloring pages (see Introductory Activities below).

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

*Dragon Badges: Print pictures of Dragon Tale characters or get theme stickers. As young guests enter the door, put a character picture on them using double-sided tape. Kids will love the idea of being Ord, Cassie, or Quetzal for a day!

*Activity Book Pages: Spread theme coloring and dot-to-dots books along with pencils and crayons. They will occupy party guests while they're waiting for others to show up.

*Paint a Dragon: Prior to the party, hang sheets of butcher paper all around the room at kids' eye level. Offer paints, felt pens, crayons, and color pencils, and have the children draw their best dragon. (These drawings can serve as decorations for the remainder of the party.)

Just be sure to assign an assistant to help the kids and keep an eye out for any of them accidentally painting the wall.:-)

    Favors

For Dragon Tales party favors you can give out any kind of items that are suitable for toddlers. These can be coloring pages, stickers, plastic toys, removable tattoos, bubble-blowing containers, dragon plush toys and any other theme related goodies.

    Dragon Tales Party Games

*Seek and Find with Ord: Hide various toys (treasure) around the party area beforehand. After everyone has arrived get them to find as much treasure as they can. Appoint an adult helper (Ord) for this game to give clues to younger kids so every person finds some treasure.

*Balancing Act: You can set up a balance beam in the backyard before the party. Lift it a few inches off the ground, and check to make sure it's secure.

Have the kids practice walking across the beam one at a time. If you have slightly older kids, you can get them to walk backwards or sideways. Assign an adult helper to spot the kids so none of them fall down. Award prizes to little gymnasts.

*Red Light, Green Light: Here is a popular party game that fits the theme quite well.

Have the kids stand behind the starting line. You are the "Police Officer" standing at the finish line on the opposite side of the party area. As you call out "Green Light", the Dragon Tale party guests must quickly walk towards the finish line. As you say "Red Light" - they should stop instantly.

Continue the game in the similar manner until the first kid reaches the finish line. That person becomes the "Police Officer" in the next round.

*Follow the Leader: Play some upbeat party music, and get one of the adults to lead the game. He or she does various body movements and gestures. And the entire group must copy the movements of the leader.

*Up, Up & Away: Give out no-spill bubble containers to all the guests. Have them blow as many bubbles as they like.

*Pin the Tail on the Dragon: Play theme version for "pin-the-tail" game. Create a dragon "poster" before the party. Tape it to the wall. Cut out enough construction paper "dragon tails" for everyone. Blindfold the kids, spin them around, and get them to pin their tails on the dragon.

*Obstacle Course: Set up a course in your backyard for kids to complete one at a time. You can have cones to run around, boxes to crawl through, chairs to crawl under, or tiny items to jump over.

*Pretend Play: Ask each child to pick their favorite character from a story or a movie. If they have trouble coming up with an answer, help them by asking "Do you like Harry Potter, or maybe you'd like to be Mickey Mouse?"

You can ask them questions such as "Mickey, how is Pluto feeling?" or "Pinocchio, where are you planning to go today?" Get them to use their imagination and play along. Continue with the "pretend character" dialog for each child. The kids, especially the very young ones, will love it!

*Zak & Wheezie's Music Machine: Have the children line-up. Give them bells, toy drums, maracas, tambourines, bean bags or anything else you have that makes sounds. Put on a tune for "inspiration", so the kids can follow the beat.

The person in the front starts playing her instrument and bouncing while the rest of the group follows. The birthday child can lead first, then trade places with other kids - so everyone gets a chance to lead the parade.

    Food and Drink

    Dragon Birthday Cake:

*Dragon Cake: Bake a round or rectangular cake. Looking at a dragon picture, copy its outline onto the cake. Use frosting, food coloring, and/or decorating kit to create the colors and shapes you want.

You can do the same with a picture of any Dragon Tales character. Or, you can bake a simple cake and place theme cake toppers on it.

    Dragon Tales Party Food Ideas:

    *Quetzal Sandwiches
    *Dragon Burgers

*Peanut Butter Planks: Wash celery and cut it into small pieces. Fill each piece with peanut butter. Top with raisins or chocolate chips.

    *Cassie's Fruit Salad
    *Ord's Ice Cream
    *Dragonberry Juice
