Elmo Birthday Party Ideas

Is your child a big fan of Sesame Street? Then Elmo birthday party would be ideal for his or her birthday! Below you'll find ideas for Elmo theme invitations, decorations, games and food.

Resources:

  • Party Supplies
  • Free Printable Invitations

  • Invitations

Here's how you can make your own handmade Elmo party invitations. Cut out postcards (about 8"x10") from a cardstock paper. Fold postcards in half. Make several copies of Elmo's image from coloring pages. Ask your child (or do it yourself) to color the images. Next, glue those images on the outside of your invitation cards. On the inside of your invitations, write with crayons something like "Elmo says, "Come have a ball at (your child's name) birthday party!" Then include your Elmo birthday party details. Decorate the back sides of your invitations and envelopes with Elmo stickers.

You can make Elmo birthday party invitations in a shape of little TV's. Just draw a TV screen on each postcard. Next, cut out Elmo and other Sesame Street characters and glue them on TV "screen". Write "Sunny day sweeping the clouds away on my way to where the air is sweet. Please say you come to play at my birthday party!" Put invitations in envelopes and mail.

You can ask all your Elmo birthday party guests to dress in red for a great Elmo theme party.

    Decorations

Have red color as much as you can in all your Elmo party decorations. Also include some yellow, green and blue colors.

Elmo Party Draw and cut out Big Bird's footprints on yellow-colored paper and place them on your driveway. This is a fun way to lead your guests to your house. Decorate your backyard and doorway with balloons and paper streamers. Have a banner on your front door saying "Welcome to Sesame Street!" or "Elmo Welcomes You!"

For your party room decorations, you can have Elmo Mylar balloon, and some paper streamers. If you have Elmo or any other Sesame Street character toys, put them around your room. Have a couple of bought or handmade Elmo posters on the wall. Use medium or large boxes to design alphabet blocks. Cover the boxes with yellow paper. Draw letters or stick Elmo stickers on each side of the box.

Decorate your table with red tablecloth and have Elmo-related centerpiece on your table: use Tickle Me Elmo toy, alphabet blocks, etc. You can have Elmo party banner that says "Happy Birthday, (your child name)!"

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

*Elmo Coloring Pages: Have Elmo coloring pages or dot-to-dots for each guest. Provide them with crayons. This will keep the young ones occupied while waiting for the other guests to arrive.

*Guess How Many?: Fill a clear jar with cookies. Have each Elmo birthday party guest (parents can help the younger kids) guess how many cookies are in the jar. The one who can get the closest to the actual number will get to be the first to take the picture with a birthday child.

*Sesame Street Puzzle: Have a theme jigsaw puzzle on the floor for kids to figure out.

    Favors

Make sure you thank the kids for coming to your Elmo birthday party with great Elmo party favors. Here are some favor ideas for Elmo birthday party: yo-yo's, crayons, birthday bubbles, Elmo stickers, ABC blocks. Other Elmo birthday favors can include squirt rubber ducky, Elmo bounce balls, balloons, coloring pages, etc.

    Elmo Birthday Party Games

*The Letter Game: Out of all Elmo birthday party theme games, this one has an educational benefit as well...Split your party group into two teams. Have one adult per team to help out. Each team has five minutes to come with as many words as they can, starting with the first letter of the birthday child's name.

It may help to have the teams "brainstorming" in separate rooms. You can play this game several times using different letters. You might want to put the kids into different group combinations each round to avoid the same team being ahead every time.

*Oscar the Grouch Garbage Toss: Empty trash can. (You can also use a bucket.) Take junk mail that you might have around the house (or old newspapers, etc) and crumple it up into balls. Get the kids to toss the junk mail balls into Oscar's garbage can.

You can set different distances for ball toss: right in front of the target, few feet away, several yards away, etc. Have the children toss "balls" from those distances for points. Set a different point structure for every distance. Put some Oscar (or other Sesame Street characters) stickers on the trash can.

*Pin the Nose on Elmo: Add a little twist on a classic pin the tail game. Prepare Elmo poster out of construction paper or buy it before the game. Draw and cut out Elmo noses out of orange construction paper. Stick tape on each nose and put party guests' initials on them.

Blindfold your birthday child, spin him or her two times and get him or her to put the nose on Elmo where it belongs. Repeat with the other kids.

*Dorothy's Goldfish Bowl: Fill a large bucket or a tub with water. Place goldfish bowl or other glass bowl on a chair or low table. Have the kids form a line leading from a bucket/tub to the empty goldfish bowl. Children fill plastic paper cups with water and pass them from one person to the next. The last person in the line dumps the water into a bowl.

Have a stopwatch to time how long it takes to fill the bowl. Get the kids to play several times to see if they can get faster.

*Gelatin Eating Contest: Put equal amounts of flavored gelatin into small bowls. Have one bowl of gelatin for each Elmo birthday party guest. Line up bowls along the ground on a tablecloth. Put names of Sesame Street characters on each bowl: Elmo (for birthday child's bowl), Cookie Monster, Ernie, Bert, Big Bird, Zoe, Telly, etc.

Each player places his or her hands on the ground next to the bowl. On command "Go", all players start eating gelatin in their bowls without lifting their hands off the ground. The first person to clean his or her bowl wins!

*Ha! Ha! Ha!: Have the kids stand in a circle. One player says "Ha", the next one in a circle says "Ha Ha", and the next one says "Ha Ha Ha" and so on around the circle with each player adding "Ha" to the string. The objective of the game is to keep a straight face without laughing. The person who starts laughing leaves the circle. The last remaining player is your "Ha Ha Ha" champion.

The kids who left the circle can make facial expressions or funny comments to get people in the circle to laugh (without touching or tickling them!)

*Rescue Elmo: Place Elmo toy or a coloring page cut-out somewhere in a far area of your backyard or party room. Kids will pretend to be firemen. Design a small obstacle course for children: go around the tree, through hula hoop, jump over a little stone, etc. Their objective is to go through obstacles and save Elmo. Get the kids to do this activity as a team. They can hold hands in the beginning of the game.

*Name That Smell: Put smelly items like oranges, soap and cinnamon into small lunch bags. Tie the bags closed with a curling ribbon. Poke a small hole on top of each bag. Get the kids to sit in a circle. Let the children pass the bags around to sniff and guess the content. After every child had a chance to sniff the bags, open the bags and reveal the contents.

*Follow Elmo: It's hilarious to watch young kids dance. Get the music ready before Elmo birthday party. Pick the leader out of the group - he or she will be Elmo. Have the children lined up behind the leader or spread out around the room.

As the music CD starts playing the leader begins moving his body with different dance moves. All the other kids copy the leader's moves. If the leader needs some help, encourage him or her with moves like: jumping, hopping, turning around, clapping hands, bending/twisting, etc.

Have the birthday child going first and then switch to another player to be Elmo until everyone has had a chance.

    Food and Drink

    Elmo Birthday Cakes:

*Elmo Cake: Prepare oval cake according to directions and frost it with red frosting. Prepare three cup cakes. Frost two cup cakes with white frosting and the third one with orange frosting. Carefully slice the tops of all three cup cakes off. Put them on top of the oval cake as white eyes and an orange nose. Use black licorice to make Elmo's pupils and mouth.

*Elmo Face Cake: Prepare two-layer cake mix according to package directions. You can buy Elmo face shaped cake pan (available at party stores). Use Elmo icing decorations to decorate a super cool Elmo Face cake.

    Elmo Birthday Party Food Ideas:

*Elmo Sandwiches: Prepare birthday child's favorite sandwiches. Cut them into fun shapes such as stars, triangles, circles, and squares.
*Cookie Monster Cookies: Bake your birthday child's favorite cookies. Make them extra-large "monster" size.
*Elmo Face and Dorothy Goldfish Cup Cakes: Prepare cup cakes for your Elmo birthday party. Decorate some cup cakes with red sprinkles to make Elmo's face, with orange jelly beans for the nose, and white mini-marshmallows for the eyes. Decorate the rest of the cup cakes with a fish-shaped crackers, for Dorothy (Elmo's pet), and blue sprinkles for water.

    *Pizza
    *Hotdogs
    *Hamburgers
    *Fish-Shaped Crackers
