Fish Cake

Ingredients:
1 box of devil's food cake mix
1 8-inch bowl like pan
1 bag of marshmallows
2 tablespoons of water
1 and a half boxes of powered sugar
M&Ms for decorating
3 cookies
2 toothpicks

Make the devil's food cake in a bowl-like pan. (Or you can use multiple 8-inch pans and stack the cakes on top of each other.)

While the cake is baking and cooling, you can make the fondant:
  • Melt 1 bag of marshmallows with 2 tablespoons of water (about 2-3 minutes stirring every 30 sec.). Then using Crisco vegetable oil grease the counter surface and your hands and in between your fingers.
  • Pour out the melted marshmallows onto the greased surface, then add 1 box of powdered sugar and knead until it becomes like dough. When it starts to get sticky add the other half box of powdered sugar. Add more as needed.
The fondant is done when it is not that sticky anymore. (Feel free to re-grease the counter and hands many times - it will be helpful.)

When the cake is cooled carve it into a fish-like shape. Then frost with frosting (Pillsbury or Betty Crocker's). Next, roll out fondant on greased surface to about 1/4 of an inch thick. Then gently lay over the fish cake and mold the fondant around the cake. (If you want the fish to be colored add food coloring.) Dye a piece of fondant for the fish and dye another piece for the stripes. After placing and molding the fondant around the cake, cut the excess off.

Next cut long pieces for the stripe on the sides and fins and tail. Place them where you want and cut the excess off. For the fins, I wrapped cookies cut like the shape of fins in fondant and then decorated them with stripes.

For the top fin, stick two toothpicks in to support the "fin" on top of the "fish". Cut out circles for eyes and then surround the fish with M&Ms, or roll a piece of fondant around the bottom of the fish to make it more presentable. Put M&Ms for the eyes and glue them with frosting. Your fish birthday cake is done!
