Cake Submitted by Rebecca M. from Burlington, Ontario.

My son Jacob wanted a Garfield theme for his 4th birthday this year. Right away I knew I would make a 3D Garfield cake.
I used the Wilton Stand-Up Cuddly Bear Pan Set for the cake. I used 2 Betty Crocker chocolate cake mixes and added a chocolate Jell-O pudding and extra egg to each cake mix. This makes the cake a little firmer and more durable for decorating. I coated the inside of each side of the pan and the outside of the baking core with Wilton Cake Release then secured the halves with the clips.
Next, I filled the pan with 6 cups of the cake batter, inserted the core and then added 2/3 cup of batter into the core and baked the cake at 350°F for about an hour. Once the Garfield birthday cake had cooled, I removed the core and put the cake from inside the core back into the centre of the cake. Then using a knife I trimmed away some of the facial area to make it look more like Garfield and a little less like a bear. The feet on the cake were turned upward so I cut them off and repositioned them to look more like a sitting cat and filled in the gaps with some of cupcakes I made using the extra cake batter. Cupcakes were also used to form a tail.
Since I have 3 kids who keep me extremely busy, I usually cheat and buy my icing to save time. I used 2 containers of the white Wilton Decorator Icing and added orange, golden yellow, and a little bit of ivory icing colors for Garfield's fur which I applied using tip #233 to make the fur look more realistic. For the eyes, I used a star tip and then smoothed it out with a wet knife and then outlined them using a round tip and chocolate Decorator Icing which I also used to add the lines in the fur once that was finished. Then to finish it off I added a pink jelly bean for the nose.
I also decorated the extra cupcakes to look like Garfield using leftover icing. For the ears I used candies that looked like orange slices bought from the bulk food store. I cut each orange slice in half to make ears and added pink jelly beans for noses.
