"Funniest Home Videos" Party Activity
Making home videos with kids can be lot of fun! Host your own version of the popular TV show "America's Funniest Home Videos." Just invite a professional cameraperson to create a great party video, and you'll have an event to remember!
Preparation
Find a professional cameraman by looking in the Yellow Pages under "Video." For a less-expensive alternative you can have a friend or a family member do the job. If you don't have a DVD/VCR player, you'll need to rent or borrow one.
Materials Needed:
Costumes or old clothes (available at costume and thrift shops) Comic or joke books Popcorn CDs and a CD player
When trying to find a video expert, make sure the person you hire has a camera that's compatible with your DVD/VCR player so you can play the video during the party. Try to find a cameraman who can show the kids how the camera works and who is comfortable working with kids.
Before the special guest arrives, divide the kids into two groups and give them some time to come up with ideas for their own funny home video. (Or, for a smaller group, let everyone work together.) Put on some music and let the kids come up with a silly skit, commercial, or dance for the video.
Provide costumes and old clothing to help them get inspired. Then let the video person record the first group of kids while you keep the other group entertained in a separate room, with comic books or joke books. The cameraperson can then film the second group. Later, bring everyone into the party for a private screening complete with popcorn.
Creative Options
After the main event ask the cameraman to go around the room and record each guest giving a special message or greeting birthday child (or party host). This will provide priceless memories of the party!
Have the kids bring their own home videos and show some clips to the crowd. Encourage the kids to choose something funny from their video collection and have them vote for the funniest home video of all.
Move the guests one at a time into a separate room and have the camera operator get close-up of body parts such as feet, fingers, or noses. Then have the guests talk in a funny voice. Repeat for all the guests, then show the video to the crowd so they can try to guess who's who.
Prizes and Favors
Send the kids home with inexpensive used DVDs or videotapes from a video rental store. Or, give each guest a big bag of popcorn (store-bought or homemade) to eat while watching a favorite video at home.
Trouble-Shooting Tips
Encourage the kids to be as silly as they want for the videos but not to get too rambunctious. Give special encouragement to any kids who seem shy in front of the camera.
Take care of the videos brought by kids - they are very valuable to the owners.
