How to Make a Volcano

Looking for some fun ideas for entertaining your party guests? Why not make a volcano that erupts!? It's one of my very favorite party activities that will be remembered by the kids for a long time - guaranteed!

For best results do your 'volcano making' outdoors in the dirt. If this is not possible, then do it in the sink.

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 Narrow-neck bottle (25 oz./750 ml)
  • A mound of dirt
  • 1 tbsp. liquid detergent
  • A few drops of red food coloring
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • Warm water
  • 2 tbsp. baking soda

Set the bottle on the ground and build up a mound of dirt around it so that only the neck of the bottle shows a little. Put 1 tbsp. liquid detergent in the bottle.

Add a few drops of food coloring. Add 1 cup vinegar. Pour in warm water, enough to fill the bottle almost to the top.

Very quickly add 2 tbsp. baking soda that has been mixed with a little water. (Mixing it with water makes it easier to add it quickly.)

Now stand back and enjoy the eruption!

    Trouble-Shooting Tips

  • To make the process easier, put the baking soda in a cup with a spout before mixing it with water.

  • Because of the nature of this experiment, it should be closely supervised by an adult.
