How to Make a Pinata

Before we get started, you can take a look at some ready-made pinatas. But if you like creating things and want your child birthday party to have a personal touch, then I highly recommend making your own pinata!

You can create your pinata as plain or as decorative as you wish. The easiest way of making pinatas is simply to put several grocery bags inside one another. (You can also use a colorful paper shopping bag.) Next, fill the pinata with candy and toys, and staple or tie securely at the top.

To make a traditional pinata:

  • Start with a thin paste of flour and water.
  • Cut long strips of newspaper - lots of them.
  • Blow up a large balloon, dip the strips one at a time into the paste, and press them onto the balloon.
  • Overlap the strips, covering the balloon securely several times and leaving one end uncovered.
  • Let it dry for 24 hours or more, then pop the balloon and remove it.
Fill the pinata with toys and candy and seal the end with more newspaper strips dipped in the flour paste. Decorate your pinata as you wish: make a clown face, a cat face, a jack-o-lantern, etc. Use tempera paint and any assortment of scraps of paper or cloth. Next, tie a yarn or a string around it.
