Cake Submitted by Sharon W. from Clinton Township, Michigan.

This Hawaiian cake was for a little girl who was having a "Hula Birthday Party". Since it was for a younger girl I didn't want to use the adult styled doll, so I came up with this one.
Make a 1/2 sheet cake using 2 boxes of your favorite cake mixes (pan size 11"x15"x2"). Tip: I like the ones with the pudding in the mix - that way my cakes seem to be more moist.
While my hula girl cake is baking I make my own buttercream frosting using 2 lb. bag powdered sugar, 2 sticks butter, 2 cups Crisco (or any brand) shortening, 2 tsp flavoring (I usually use vanilla), 4 tbsp of water, 2 tbsp meringue powder (optional). Add dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed together. Should be creamy.
Note: add dry ingredients a cup at a time to prevent frosting tasting "griddy". Additional water can be added 1 tbsp at a time, if frosting is too stiff. Tint about 2-3 cups a royal blue color for the water and the borders, about 1/2 cup of golden yellow for hula skirt.
Once the cake has cooled, frost it with the remaining white frosting. Just cover one corner of cake diagonally - the top doesn't have to be smooth nor thick because it will be covered anyway. Cover the rest of the top with the blue frosting - this will be "the water", so it doesn't have to be smooth. Waves can be made by lifting up on spatula while spreading.
For the decorations, I crushed up some cinnamon covered graham crackers for the sand, then added gummy or Swedish fish, toy starfish and palm trees.
For the "Hula Girl" I used Wilton's miniature Wonder Doll pan and a Wilton doll pick. I then used a star tip to make her Hula skirt and some of the blue to cover her top.
