  • Invitations

You have several options for creating your Indiana Jones party invitations.

First, you can search for and download an image of 1930s world map. Next, use graphics editing program to add an airplane and red dotted line to show the route of Indy's travels.

Then print that image, fold it in half so the world map ends up being on the outer side. Write party information on the opposite side. You can start with "(Child's name) is turning (age), and he wants you to come to his Indiana Jones birthday party!" Then offer the rest of the party details.

Second, you can take an image of the birthday child dressed up as Indiana Jones wearing a fedora, khaki pants, military style shirt and a leather jacket. Then print off that image on the front of the cards. Or, you can have an image of "real" Indiana Jones instead.

Lastly, you can write party information on A4 paper sheets. Then put the sheets in manila folders marked "Top Secret." You can begin your message by writing "Your Indiana Jones secret mission, should you choose to accept it, is..."

    Decorations

Set up a great Indiana Jones party atmosphere by putting a little extra effort into decorating the area.

Start off by attaching a large theme movie poster on your fence or front gate. Stick Tiki torches into the ground on both sides of the walkway. Set up a large tent in your backyard. Play soundtrack from the movie.

Hang skeleton images on the wall inside the house. Spread out plastic snakes, scorpions, bats, skulls, ancient looking masks, and other theme items.

Create and mount a few signs in Egyptian or ancient languages. Place a couple of globes and rolls of world maps. Create cobwebs in some corners of the room.

Have one of the areas represent the Amazon rainforest. Twist and connect green and brown paper streamers together. Tie bunches of balloons in tropical colors.

Cover the party table with burlap. Place a plastic skull for a centerpiece. Download an image of compass off the internet. Make enough copies for each guest, laminate the pictures, and have them as placemats at each table setting.

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

*Transformation Corner: Set up an area where the guests can be transformed into Indiana Jones. Give each child a bandanna, fedora (or cowboy) hat, and a toy whip.

*Decorate a Name Tag: Before the party, cut name tag shapes out of construction paper. Have the children write their names and decorate the name tags using crayons, markers, stickers, and so on.

*Watch the Show: Invite the kids to watch an episode from Indiana Jones movie as they wait for others to show up.

    Favors

For Indiana Jones party favors, give such items as movie posters, bandannas, skull balls, sticker sheets, toy whips, fedora hats, and so on.

    Indiana Jones Party Games

*Find the Crystal Skull: Before the event, hide a plastic skull in your backyard.

At game time, invite the young adventurers to work as a team to find the skull. Offer clues or drawn arrows to point the kids in the right direction.

*Indy Says: Have the children play a theme version of Simon Says game.

*Lasso Throwing Activity: Tie a rope into a large circle. Get the guests to practice throwing it around a sawhorse or other inanimate objects.

*Attack the Enemy: Here is a great Indiana Jones party activity for a hot summer day.

Create and laminate a large poster of one of the antagonists from the movie. You can use such characters as Irina Spalko, Rene Belloq, Walter Donovan, and so on. Mount the poster on the fence.

Make water balloons, and have the kids throw the "water bombs" at the bad guys from a distance.

Indiana Jones *Indiana Jones Challenge: Create an obstacle course in your backyard. You can have several flat stones for the kids to step on, hula hoops to jump through, balance beams to walk on, kiddie pool to run through, and other objects to run around.

Organize a race where you time the kids with a stopwatch to determine who can go through the obstacles the fastest. Award prizes to all the participants.

*Decipher the Hidden Message: Challenge the kids to solve puzzles as fast as Indy usually does.

Write a message using mirror so the text is backward. Or, create your message by scrambling letters in the words you write. Challenge the kids to decipher the message.

*Mummy Wrap: Split the group into pairs, and give each team a roll of toilet paper.

On the command "Go," have the kids race wrapping their partners. They must use the entire roll of paper, wrapping arms separately from the torso and avoiding the head. Award the winning team, then reverse the partners' roles and start again.

*Archaeological Dig: Fill the kiddie pool with sand. Hide fake gold coins and other "treasure" in the sand. Give each child a toy shovel. Get them to find as much treasure as they can in 2 minutes time.

*Airplane: Before the party, cut airplane shapes out of cardboard for each guest. Mount a map on the wall, and mark "runway" in the middle of the map.

At the start of the game, place several obstacles on the floor such as pillows, chairs, and so on. (Avoid small or breakable objects, so the children won't trip over them.) Give the kids some time to "study" the placement of obstacles and "runway" spot on the map.

Then have the players move to the opposite side of the room. Blindfold and give them their airplanes. Have the children move across the room trying to pin their airplanes as close to the runway spot as they can.

If the person touches one of the obstacles, it's considered a plane crash and he is out. If the player lands his plane on "water", it's considered a crash-landing. Whoever pins his plane closest to the runway, wins.

    Food and Drink

    Indiana Jones Birthday Cakes:

*Treasure Chest Cake: Bake a rectangular cake, and then frost it with chocolate frosting. Decorate the cake with colorful sprinkles and chocolate gold coins to make it look like a chest lid. Clean the baking pan. Then frost the outer side of it. Set the pan at a right angle to the cake to form a treasure chest. Fill the chest with candy jewelry and chocolate gold coins.

*Indiana Jones Cake: Bake a regular sheet cake. Frost the cake with your favorite frosting. Place Indiana Jones cake toppers on the cake. (You can purchase cake toppers from party outlets.)

    Indiana Jones Party Food Ideas:

    *Monkey Brain (meatballs and pasta)
    *Butterfly Wings (potato chips)
    *Worms (gummy worms)
    *Beetles (chocolate-covered raisins)
    *Alligator Eyes (grapes)
    *Cheese & Crackers
    *Hamburgers
    *Pizza
    *Popcorn
    *Ice Cream sandwiches

    Indiana Jones Party Drink Ideas:

Serve beverages in empty coconut cups.

*Jungle Poison (raspberry lemonade): have the kids take "poison antidotes" (colorful M&Ms) right after having the drink.

    *Root Beer
    *Fresh Fruit Smoothies
