  • Invitations

You have quite a few options for creating Lego party invitations.

To start, you can take a picture of your child with one of his or her Lego creations. Then paste the image on the front of brightly colored invitation cards.

Write "Come Help Build a Lego Birthday Party with (child's name)!" Provide party details. Ask your child to help you stick theme stickers around the cards. Draw a map how to get to your house on the back of the invitation cards.

As a variation, use colorful invitation cards. But this time, punch out paper of the same color. And then glue small circles (that have been punched out) to the invitation cards. That will give the invites a nice "Lego look."

Finally, you can stagger stack 4 differently colored Duplo blocks (larger Lego blocks) in a tower. Using a label maker, create label strips with party information. Then stick them on the "Lego tower." Hand deliver the invites to your guests.

Ask the kids to wear bright colored clothes.

    Decorations

Red, blue, yellow, and green are best colors for Lego party decorations. Fill the scene with balloons and paper streamers in those colors.

Put up a Lego poster on the front fence to mark your party spot. Mount a banner that says "Welcome to Lego Builder's Party!"

Get a Lego catalog by going online (google "request Lego catalog") and submitting a request at the official Lego web site. Cut pictures from the catalog and use them for wall decorations.

To add to the theme atmosphere, cover a party table with a brightly colored cloth. Then use table accessories in colors that vary from one accessory to the next. For example, have red cups, blue napkins, yellow straws, and so forth.

Make a creation out of Lego Duplo blocks (blocks of larger size), and place it in the middle of the table for a centerpiece. Hang a personalized "Happy Birthday" banner nearby.

    Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities

*Guess How Many: Place a large number of colorful Lego blocks in a clear jar. Get the kids to guess how many pieces are in the jar. The person, who guesses the closest to the actual number, gets to take home a jar full of Lego blocks.

*Name Tags: Pre-cut name tag cards for all the guests before the party. Have the children write their names and decorate the cards with drawings or Lego stickers. Tape the cards to the kids' shirts so they can wear them during the party.

*Coloring Pages: Have sheets of coloring pages available for the younger guests to color.

    Favors

For Lego party favors, give out such cool items as Lego key chains, sticker sheets, pens, bouncy balls, Lego-land shirts, and mini building sets.

    Lego Party Games

*Lego Scavenger Hunt: Hide Lego building blocks around the party area. You should number each block, and provide clues where to find the next one. Attach instructions to the final building block explaining how to build a certain structure. Get the children to work as a team to find Lego pieces, and then build the structure together.

*Construction Site Obstacle Course: Create an enjoyable and safe obstacle course for the kids out of materials you have around the house. You can use two-by-four board to walk across, painted cans to walk around, ladder or hoops to jump through, sawhorses and plywood to crawl under, sturdy boxes to climb over, and so forth.

Show the kids how to go through the obstacle course. Next, have the children take turns running through the course. You can record individual or team times with a stopwatch and award prizes for the fastest time.

*Cool Bowling: Spray-paint cereal boxes, plastic bottles, and other containers in bright colors. Set them up on the ground and have a bowling competition.

*Lego on a Spoon Race: Split the group in 2 teams. Give each team a spoon and a Lego piece. Organize a relay race where the children carry the Lego piece on the spoon.

They run from one side of the play area, around an orange cone, and then back to starting line where they pass the spoon to the next player in line. The team to finish first, wins.

*Lego Building Contest: Provide Lego building sets with identical number of pieces for each child. Give the kids 15 minutes and have them build their own towers. Have prizes for all the participants: for most creative, coolest, colorful, tallest tower.

Take a picture of each child with his or her creation. Send pictures to the guests with 'thank you' notes after the party.

*Lego Memory Game: Place various Lego pieces on a table. Pick a child, and have him take a close look at the table trying to remember all the items.

Get him to shut his eyes and turn away. Have someone else from the group take one of the items off the table. Then have the kid open his eyes and guess which item is gone and who took it.

*Birthday Pinata: Fill a pinata with Lego gummies and other candy. Blindfold the kids one at a time, and have them take turns swinging at the pinata with a bat.

    Food and Drink

    Lego Birthday Cake:

*Lego Cake: Bake 2 rectangular cakes. Frost them in bright colors. Stack one on top of the other. Place marshmallows on top for the "bumps."

As a variation, bake one 9x13" sheet cake, place 8 cupcakes on top. Frost the cake in bright Lego color.

    Lego Party Food Ideas:

    *Pizza
    *Macaroni and cheese
*Hot dogs (with red ketchup "dots")
    *Veggie tray with dip
    *Nachos
    *Popcorn
    *Ice cream sundaes
    *Lollipops

    Lego Party Drink Ideas:

*Lego Cubes: Freeze blue (blueberry juice), yellow (pineapple drink), and red (raspberry lemonade) colored drinks in ice cube trays. Put the trays in the freezer overnight. Fill the cups with lemon-lime soda, and then add colorful ice cubes.

    *Root beer
    *Ginger ale
    *Fruit juices
