Invitations
For your magic birthday party invitations, write the party details on white cutouts of a rabbit. Cut out a black hat and make a slit in the hat into which the rabbit "disappears." Leave the rabbit's ears showing, and let the kids pull the rabbits out of the hats to read the invitations.
Secondly, purchase invisible felt-tip pen sets from a toy store. Write the party details on white sheets of paper with invisible ink. With each invitation, enclose a pen that makes the invisible writing appear. Tell the guests to color over the invitations to read the surprise information.
As a variation, you can write the magic party details with white crayon on white paper to make the invitations appear blank. Include a color crayon with each invitation, and tell the guests to color over the paper to magically reveal the party details.
Decorations
Create signs that say "Abracadabra", "Hocus Pocus", "Shazam", "Sim Salabim" and other magic words. Then put them on the fence or trees to mark the party place. Play mystique music in the background.
Cut out classic symbols of magic, such as wands, hats, and rabbits, from construction paper to decorate the walls. Hang posters of great magicians, such as David Copperfield or Harry Houdini. Tape personalized "Happy Birthday" banner as well!
You can set up a stage in your magic birthday party room where the kids can perform their magic acts. Place a sturdy piece of wood on some two-by-fours, or spread a bright sheet or blanket over the floor to serve as a stage. Make a curtain from an old sheet and hang it from floor lamps or tall-back chairs to hide behind-the-scene preparations.
Cover the magic birthday party table with a theme cloth. Spread cards on the table cover. Put a felt top hat for a centerpiece. Hang one or two magic theme Mylar balloons along with helium balloons and paper streamers.
Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities
*Dress Up: Greet all magic birthday party guests and provide them with any additional costume parts or accessories that you might have. Give felt top hats and magic wands to the partygoers.
*Magic Wands: Before the magic birthday party, make wands by taping lengths of ribbon to 2" long dowels and attaching a silver star cut from poster board to one end.
Let the kids decorate their wands with pens, glue, and glitter.
*Magic Tricks: Borrow some books on magic tricks from the library and learn a few simple ones. Then teach those tricks to your magic birthday party guests while their waiting for other kids to arrive. (Practice a few magic tricks yourself so you know they work well before your try them with the kids.) Children can later perform those magic tricks for the others.
Favors
For magic party favors, give out magic wands, top hats, decks of cards, and magic sticker sheets.
You can also send the budding magicians home with a collection of inexpensive magic tricks purchased from a toy or hobby store.
Magic Birthday Party Games
*Mind Reader: Secretly select and coach a kid ahead of time to be the Mind Reader. When the game begins, "randomly" select this child to play the part.
Ask the Mind Reader to leave the room, then select a Guilty Person. Have the Mind Reader return to the magic birthday party. Ask him one question regarding the identity of the Guilty Person.
"Magically," the Mind Reader will identify the Guilty Person. Here's the trick: be sure to phrase the question using the Guilty Peron's initials in the first words. For example, if the Guilty Person is named Bob Madden, you might say, "By (B) my (M) estimate you're a magician, can you tell us who is guilty?"
*Penny Magic: Have guests sit in a circle. Pull the birthday child aside and whisper into his ear the secret of the trick, "Select the penny that is warm." Bring the birthday child back into the circle. Show all the kids five pennies, which you place in a hat.
Have the birthday child select a penny and look at the date on the penny. Get him to pass the selected penny around the circle so every guest has a chance to look at the date, and, most importantly touch the penny. Have the last player toss the penny back into the hat.
Shake up the pennies in the hat. Then have the birthday child select the correct penny from the hat without looking (he will select the warm penny, because copper absorbs heat, and the penny handled will now be warm). Repeat the magic with other players, gently whispering the secret to each child one at a time.
*Hat Trick: Place a top hat on the table (or the floor). Get the partygoers to form a circle around it. (The age of the players will determine the distance away from the hat.) Give all the players an equal number of playing cards. Then have them toss their cards into the hat. Whoever gets the most cards in - wins!
*Magic Jelly Beans: Before the magic birthday party, fill the jars with white, red and black jelly beans. (Count and write down the total number of jelly beans before putting them into the jar.)
At game time, have the kids take guesses how many jelly beans are in the jar. Write each child's guess. At the end of the activity, announce the correct number. The person who guessed the closest to the number wins the jar with magic jelly beans.
*Card Memory: Take a deck of cards and shuffle them well. Next, place them face down on the floor or a large table. Children take turns flipping two cards over.
If they don't match, the player turns them back over and another player takes a turn. If the cards do match, the child keeps them and continues flipping until they are unable to make a match. The game is won by a person who gets the most card matches.
*Sneaky Magician: Choose one child to be a Sneaky Magician. Blindfold and have her sit in a chair. Place a magic theme item like a wand or a top hat under the chair. The rest of the children try to steal the item.
The magician must listen carefully for any kind of movement and touch the person with her hands or feet before they steal the item. A thief who is caught becomes the next magician. If the magician doesn't catch a thief, the "magical item" is put back under the chair and the game continues.
*Card Houses: Give each magic birthday party guest a deck of cards. Set a time limit of 1 minute to see who can build the tallest card house.
*Magic Box: You will need one large box and several boxes of different sizes for this magic birthday party game.
Before the event, find small gifts for all the guests and place them in boxes of varying sizes. When you're finished you should have one large wrapped box with all of the other boxes and prizes inside it.
At game time, the players sit in a circle and when you start the music, the kids pass the box around the circle as quickly as possible. When you stop the music, the lucky player holding the box must say "Abra-Ca-Dabra" and open it. (Don't tell the kids there are other boxes inside.) Once a player opens a gift he or she must leave the circle.
Play continues until all the children have opened the box and received their gifts.
Food and Drink *Rabbit-in-a-Hat Cupcakes: Bake chocolate cupcakes according to package directions. Set each cupcake on top of an extra-large (about 5" round) chocolate cookie to form hat and brim. Place on individual plates.
Roll vanilla ice-cream balls in coconut. Add M&M eyes and nose to ice-cream balls to make a rabbit face. Stick two triangle wafer cookies on top to make ears. (As you work on each ball, keep the rest frozen.) Set ice-cream balls on top of cupcakes. Magic Birthday Party Food Ideas:
