Invitations
For polka dot party invitations, buy inexpensive sheets of polka dot paper from a supply store. Glue a picture of your child near the edge and print party details in the middle of the page.
As a slight variation, you can use white invitation cards. Just make multi-colored polka dot borders on them. Glue a picture of the birthday child in the middle of the cards. Write party information on the inside.
Ask the guests to wear polka dot clothing.
Decorations
Use as much polka dot patterns as you can in your party decorations.
Put up a sign that says "It's a Polka Dot Party" near the entrance. Cut medium-size circles out of red paper, and tape them on the walkway leading to the front door. Tie red and white balloons to mailbox and other fixtures nearby.
Hang colorful paper dots from the ceiling on fishing lines. Tape polka dot paper to the wall. Fill the room with polka dot balloons. (Pay attention to younger kids, as they may swallow pieces of popped balloons.) Hang a personal "Happy Birthday" banner where everyone can see it.
Cover the table with a cloth with polka dots all over it. Fill a few small jars with white and red candy (e.g. Lifesavers) and spread the jars on the table for a nice theme decor. Have polka dot napkins, paper plates, cups, and so forth.
Guest Arrival and Introductory Activities
For the guests who arrive without polka dot clothes, stick dot stickers on them.
*Guess How Many: Fill a clear jar with red and white jelly beans. As the guests arrive, have them guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. The person who guesses the closest to the amount, gets to take the jar full of candy home.
*Coloring Activity: Set a coloring sheet on a coffee table. Invite the kids to color it with markers and pencils, and then decorate with polka dots.
Favors
Hand out such polka dot party favors as coloring pages, Play-Doh, pens, yo-yos, sticker sheets, theme key chains, temporary tattoos, and so on.
Polka Dot Party Games
*Find the Pom Pom: Before the party, hide a pom pom somewhere around the party scene.
At game time, get the kids to search for the pom pom. Give clues to help them on their hunt.
*Musical Dots: Play a theme version of Musical Chairs. Cut large round dots, and place them on the floor in a circle. The kids have to sit down on them instead of chairs during the game.
*Pin the Dot on the Dalmatian: Put up a dalmatian drawing or poster on the wall. Cut black round dots out of construction paper for all the guests.
Blindfold the kids one at a time, spin them around and get them to pin their dots on the dalmatian.
*Blow Bubbles: If the children are old enough, they can blow bubbles using spill-proof bubble bottles and wands. And if they're too young, one of the adults can do that while they run around trying to catch the floating bubbles.
*Edible Bracelets: Put doughnut-shaped candy and cereal (e.g. colorful Lifesavers, gummy rings, etc.) in separate bowls. Give the kids strings, and have them make their own bracelets.
*Twister: Have the kids play a classic Twister game.
*Birthday Pinata: Buy or make a basic pinata, and decorate it in polka dot pattern. Fill it with candy of all sorts. Have the kids take turns swinging at the pinata (blindfolded) with a bat.
