Thomas the Train cake below was kindly submitted by one of our readers like yourself... Cake Submitted by Jessica H. from San Jose, California.
This was the first cake that I have ever decorated, which was made for my son's 3rd birthday party last month. Since I've never made any attempts at baking/decorating before, Thomas the Tank Engine cake was made from pre-packaged cake mix and pre-packaged frosting that I dyed using the Wilton coloring. The cake itself is a half sheet chocolate cake (used 2 boxes of cake mix) and a small rectangle cake (1 box of cake mix). Once baked, I cut the half sheet cake into 2 sections of about 6 inches wide, cutting one of the sections in half. The whole 6" piece is the base of the cake. The 2 pieces cut in half are stacked to make the main (back) part of the engine. With the remainder of the cake, I cut it in half and stacked them to make the round front part of the cake, then trimmed it to make the round shape with a knife. The top of the cake/coal tender in back are made from the smaller cake. The slight roundness to the top was taken from the natural shape of the cake once baked. The coal tender in back was cut to size to look proportional (not measured). The 2 small round pieces on the side were made using a circle cookie cutter, then I cut the circle in half and placed one half on each side of the cake. Decorating: The blue frosting is a regular pre-made white frosting, mixed with the Wilton blue coloring. I did all of the blue frosting first, then concealed the points where the cake pieces meet by using a small round decorating tip. The black parts were frosted next using pre-made chocolate frosting, dyed black using the Wilton black coloring. The coal was made by using a star tip. Next I did the red details, placing 6 red lines across the round dome, the side details, the number 1 (Thomas' number), and the red band across the front of the engine. The yellow whistles were made from pre-made yellow icing. I drew the whistles by hand directly onto the cake, drawing the outline first, then filling it in about 3 layers deep to create the right look. The face was done last. This was created from pre-made white frosting with just a touch of Wilton black dye. The nose is just a mound of frosting dabbed on with a small spatula. Then finally finished off with the face details and small round dots in the front for bumpers. The smoke stack on top was just the same black frosting drawn on using a small round decorating tip (several circles stacked on top of each other). For Thomas the Train party ideas, click here...
