Twin Birthday Party Tips and Ideas
When planning a twin birthday party, many parents face a dilemma: do I throw an individual party for each child or do I have a "joint" celebration? The following party ideas for multiples will offer some creative ways to have the best of both worlds. You can emphasize the individual nature of the celebration, and save money in the process as well.
If the kids are under the age of 3, you don't have to worry about having separate parties. One single party with a few guests will do the trick. But have 2 small cakes (or cupcakes for multiples) - so the kids can blow out "their own" birthday candles and make a wish.
As the twins get older, you can have 2 birthday parties on the same day. Here are the tips to make it work...

Your Timetable & Party Themes
Host parties for twins on the same day (Saturday or Sunday) at your house, but at different times.
First one can be at 11AM, and the second one at around 3PM. (There are many simple ways to determine who goes first - "Rock, Paper, Scissors" is one of the options.) Both parties don't have to be long: 2 hours each is plenty!
Ask children to choose a favorite Classic or Character party theme. Visit theme pages on this website to help your party planning.
Twin Birthday Invitations
Make a party guest list with each child. It's likely there will be overlaps, but since each sibling will be attending each other's party - both kids will have a chance to celebrate with most of their friends.
To keep your party simple, it's a good idea to keep the number of guests manageable. If you require extra help, involve additional family members and friends.
Make birthday invitations according to the party theme each twin has chosen. (Review our theme parties - every one has its own Invitations section.) Make it clear that it's a (Name's) party and not a twin birthday party, so there are no surprises.
It's a good idea to write "NO Gifts Please" in your invitations. This little step prevents any potential hurt feelings, if one of the twins gets more presents than the other.
Twin Birthday Party Decorations
You can use the same decorations for both parties. This can save time and money.
Tie balloons at the front entrance and inside the house. Hang streamers all around the party room. Use basic colors such as blue, red and white; and avoid black or pink. This especially works to your advantage if your children are of opposite sex.
Blow a lot of balloons and scatter them on the floor around the party area. (Balloon pieces can be swallowed - use extra caution for children under the age of 3.)
Besides the balloons, you can use items that fit the theme. For example, if one of the twins is having a sports party, spread out baseballs and footballs. Or, for a child who is into monkeys, use stuffed "jungle" animals.
Cover the twin birthday party table with a basic table cloth. You can paint a simple "Happy Birthday" banner for each child, and hang it in the area. Just remember to switch the banners at the appropriate time!
Twin Gift Ideas
When purchasing gifts for the twins, it's a good idea to have separate presents for each that reflect their interests. You might decide to give a large gift for both as well, if you like. But giving personal gifts still stresses to the kids that "you're unique individuals, and you do matter!" As the children approach the teen years, they can plan their own parties including the activities, decorations, refreshments and doing all the inviting themselves.
